Why this tour
Meiji Shrine sits inside a forest of roughly 100,000 trees, planted by hand a century ago in the middle of the city. At 8 in the morning it’s a different world from the afternoon crowds — mist in the trees, the sound of gravel underfoot, and locals quietly starting their day with a prayer.
Walking it with a local changes what you see: why you bow at the torii gate, what the sake barrels mean, how to wash your hands at the temizuya, and how to make a wish properly. Guests tell us they used what they learned at every shrine for the rest of their trip.
Afterwards we cross into Harajuku — five minutes and a complete change of universe — for a relaxed brunch where you can ask your guide anything about Tokyo.

What guests say about this tour
“Midori was an excellent host and guide. She made everyone feel comfortable and was very knowledgeable about the Meiji Shrine and Japan history. She took her time and made it a really peaceful experience.”
“I really loved this tour with Tomo! It’s such a tranquil part of Tokyo and really nice way to spend the morning. I had visited other shrines and temples before but without a guide. It was so nice having a guide for this and learn more about the culture, religion, history etc. Thanks for a great tour!!”
“Arisa was the best tour guide! Very knowledgeable and friendly :)”

Frequently asked questions
Why visit Meiji Shrine in the morning?
The shrine opens at sunrise and the tour runs at 08:00, before the tour buses arrive. You’ll experience the forest close to silent — by midday the main path can see thousands of visitors per hour.
What time does the tour actually end? Can I plan something at 9:30 or 10:00?
The forest walk takes about 60 minutes and we arrive at the Harajuku café around 9:00. Brunch is self-paced — most guests wrap up by 9:45, so a 10:00 next activity in central Tokyo is comfortable. If you need to leave earlier, you can do just the Meiji Shrine walk portion and slip away around 9:00 — just let your guide know at the start.
Is there a dress code for visiting the shrine?
No formal dress code — normal travel clothes are fine. Your guide will walk you through the etiquette that matters: bowing at the gates, the hand-washing ritual, and how to offer a coin and a wish respectfully.
How much does brunch cost?
Brunch is pay-as-you-order at a local Harajuku café — most guests spend ¥1,000–¥2,000 (about $7–14). It’s kept separate so you can order exactly what you feel like.
I’m vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have allergies — can I enjoy the brunch?
Lacto-ovo vegetarians (eggs and dairy OK) are well-covered at the Harajuku cafés we use. Strict vegan and gluten-free are honestly difficult — there aren’t many places in Harajuku that can accommodate them at brunch hour. For any allergies, message us before booking and we’ll confirm what each of our cafés can manage.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Very much so — the walk is flat and shaded, the forest gives kids room to move, and the brunch stop breaks it up nicely. It’s our most family-friendly tour.
Can I stay in Harajuku afterwards?
Absolutely — the tour ends in the middle of Harajuku, and your guide will mark up a map of Takeshita Street, Omotesando, and quieter back streets worth your afternoon.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs in light rain — the forest is genuinely beautiful in mist, and umbrellas are easy to grab at any convenience store. In heavy rain or storm warnings we’ll reach out directly to reschedule or refund, so you don’t have to make the call yourself days in advance.
